Wrong. You can find sites with all those updates repacked in a single installer - and this single package is what people call unofficial SP4. Some sites provide larger packages - containing optional updates (DirectX 9c, Windows Media Player 11, Internet Explorer 8, all available dotnet framework versions, etc.) and even some non-MS freeware.

It's
drop box. You can easy check it yourself, just change language in FDM to English (as it is required for all reports).

When I perform a download, the FDM UI opens and nothing does seams to do anything from that point on. No "Add download" dialog window pops up ! I then close FDM window (that takes about 10 sec) and then, the download is performed by the FF download utility.
Have you tested FDM with IE?
Can you see FDM plugin 1.7.3.1 enabled when browsing Firefox extensions?
Can you create a new WIndows user account, login to it, turn off your antivirus protection and test FDM and Firefox there, with no other add-ons enabled in Firefox?
