Location of FDM Save Data

Postby Rei » Fri Mar 26, 2021 10:12 am

Where is the location of FDM's save data located at? Yesterday my FDM just crashed while doing literately nothing at all (not even downloading) & when I run at it back again it show up with a notification of corrupted save data files.

I'd like to upload those corrupted save data files in the hopes that the devs can help recover the content (or at least the download list) of all those save data.
This has happened a few times over the past decade or so, so it is a little concerning that FDM corrupted those save data for whatever reason.

My FDM version is 3.9.7 Build 1641, while my OS is 32-bit Windows 10.

Sorry, it seems like the URL of the picture of the notification didn't load properly so here is the location of the URL:

Nevermind... I found it... So now I zipped the file & uploaded to the following site:

Can the devs help in recovering the download list at least?

Also should I create a separate thread for this or continue on this thread?

Hello,
Can you please upload it to some file hosting service which does not require registration? E.g. anonfiles.com.

I don't think 4Shared requires registration to download but here is another download link from anonfiles as instructed:

Ah, it's FDM3. Sorry, it's not supported. The current version we do support is FDM6.

Any possible way for me to recover the save data myself somehow?

That depends on how did you recover from a system crash? If you did a restore to last working image then anything after that time is gone. As to the saved data I recall it was of either two places the Appdata/user or in the FDM program files itself. But if you didn't copy/backup both those places the data will be gone since it will not have a point to reference where it last saved and no data will be found. Also 4Shared can be shared but if you didn't copy the right settings to do so 4share will lock others out.

@StormJumper What do you mean "system crash"? Only FDM crashed, not the whole system. Just crashed by itself without any reason, then the next thing after executing the program again, the notification window (with the image linked above) appeared.

Anyway, I was able to locate the FDM save data file at "C:\Users\Rei\AppData\Roaming\Free Download Manager" & uploaded to 4shared & anonfiles but it seems that Alex has removed the link to those files as he confirmed that he won't be supporting FDM 3.9.7 & by extension, helping to recover the corrupted download list.

Are you able to assist? If so, I could re-post the download link here or another way if I am not allowed to re-post the link here.

If your download.sav file size is greater than 6 MB, the file is probably broken and can't be fixed. Other service files are usually smaller and should be OK.
In older FDM versions the problem might arise when file sizes were greater than 1 MB, so you can find old topics about this problem, see the search results:
search.php?keywords=service+sav&terms=all&author=Usher&sc=1&sf=all&sr=posts&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=-1&t=0&submit=Search

File download.sav contains download list: URLs (including magnet links), download locations, download status, group assignment, embedded *.torrent files, etc. Some of those data may be extracted with hex editors.

Thanks for the tip. Jeez, my downloads.sav file is 27.8 MB in size. I don't know how to use a hex editor but I will try & see what I can do on my end. Got any hex editor recommendation for n00bs?

FDM itself should warn you when your file was about 6.5 MB in size (it's about hundred torrents and thousand regular downloads on the download list). How could you ignore the warning? Some of maintenance tasks FDM may do only on open or on close so it looks like you have kept FDM running a year or more. Or you wanted to backup all the Internet ;-P

Do you really need all those data? Torrents can be easy restored even without download.sav. IIRC, I posted some hints about it in the past. I don't think that you need info about all finished downloads.

I can take a look on your files, but if you want to get more help from me, you should create account on this forum. After that you will be able to send all your *.sav files to me as a private message.

Account created! I will send you a link via PM to the AnonFiles that still exist if you'd like.

As for the warning, it never showed up once. The regular download themself shouldn't be more than 50 & planned to be downloaded once I leave the PC idle overnight, leaving no regular downloads after I clock back into the PC. The torrent files though are very likely in the thousands but are mostly undownloadables, dead seeds & whatnot & are just sitting there on the download list until I can get them transferred to a good proper dedicated torrent downloader whenever that is.

I have installed FDM version 6.14.0.3798 & hopefully we can get the download list transferred there one way or another.

Again, thank you for your offer to help.
