Re: fdm 5 error "failed to query file size"

It's normal for many cases of server-side redirection used by file hosting services. You have quoted only the first part of error message, while the second part is more important as it contains the reason "Access denied. Invalid user name or password".
It means that the download site admins don't like any download managers at all or don't allow to use download managers for anonymous users. In the second case you should provide your login name and password for such sites when FDM asks for them. In the fisrt case you should turn on "Allow the browser to download if you press Cancel" option in FDM and click "Cancel" to pass download back to the browser.

Sometimes it may be an error that FDM should ignore, as the server side just doesn't provide file size - you can read older messages in this topic, starting from here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16856&p=38821&hilit=Failed+to+query+file+size#p38821

if you expect more detailed explanation or some fix provided by FDM developers, you should follow the reporting rules and provide more details, please.

You can change default bittorrent ports in FDM (also in FDM 5, IIRC), but you can't directly change ports specified by bittorrent extensions (you can only disable these extensions). If it's really needed and your admin allows you to do it, you can use more powerful tools for port redirection (router, firewall, proxy etc. - external or installed in your system).

I know you could do it in FDM 3.
I asked because I can see no way to do it in FDM 5 so a vague I think you can in FDM 5 is no use to me.
What do you mean by a bittorrent extension?

Currently FDM 5 is a replacement for downloader embedded in a browser rather than full-featured download manager. FDM 5 is good for newbies, while FDM 3 is a must-have for advanced users.

BitTorrent is a strictly defined protocol with many extensions added to the original standard (like support for DHT, magnet links, etc.). Useful extensions are described as BitTorrent Enhancement Proposals (see http://www.bittorrent.org/beps/bep_0000.html) and most of them are already considerated for standardization, some other are available only in specific client software.

Hello,
i'm not fan of the new flat design but the tagging feature that replace tabs is really cool.

i'm using the latest fdm 5 beta build 5140 with chrome and it work flawlessly.

for me the most important functions that are still missing :
- the move up and down.
- the multiple files drag and drop, perhaps it's my mistake but i still don't know, how to download multiple links at the same time, i've tried drag and drop multiple links, and copy paste multiple links, always one file is downloading.
without this function downloading files that are splitted in a lot of parts is really a pain.

Thanks for your hard work.
best

Hi,

Looks like I'm 'Post[ing] a reply' (looks like the only option to post) instead of 'Post[ing] a message' (which doesn't exist), so I'm not sure where this is going to go in the message order.

I was about to install FDM on a new computer recently, and decided to check to see if there is a newer version, a 3.9.8 or something, and came across the version 5, which I jumped on as it sounded like a greatly improved version, not that it needed much improvement. But whoa...

Anyhow, I posted a more general version of this on page http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/blog ... uild-5140/, where there are '2 thoughts on “Meet New FDM5 Build 5140”', the reason for existence and format of which I have failed to figure out, but anyhow, where my post is 'awaiting moderation' for more than a week...

Let me be more specific here. I could see no indication from any area of the v.5 whether it still does the splitting of the download into chunks as the old version did, or not (there are many, many things like where the download groups are based on the file extension, is this really a beta version, are the people creating the new version the same set of people that did the old version, etc. but I want to focus on one and at least try to get a feel on where this is going.) There are 41 pages here, but I was able to read the first page, where the most similar question I could see is: "Where is the display of number of sections?" (which goes a step further and assumes that there are those sections, where I am not at yet, due to what the UI, settings, description (or lack thereof) of the new version makes available.) And the response to that basically seems to be: "... we are going to add the habitual Table View UI. Other options mentioned in this thread will be added as well, including buttons that let you quickly switch the download speed."

Does that mean the splitting into chunks is not there yet but will be added? If so, what kind of a time frame is in mind?

Thanks.

This topic is OK. If you want to post a new message and create a new topic, you should go up level - to the topic list. When browsing any existing topic, you can only post a reply - it seems to be obvious.

See my opinions about the current state of FDM 5:

FDM 5 works similar to FDM 3.x, but some download parameters are calculated automatically and you can't change them using options available in FDM 5 GUI. For example number of sections (segments, chunks) per download is calculated basing on your network connection parameters. in short - FDM 5 starts download using a single connection and tries to create more sections depending on the connection speed and download size.
There may be also misunderstanding about progress bar meaning - AFAIK FDM 5 still displays single progress bar as a sum of progress for all chunks. You can see a picture like xxxxxxxxxx__________ instead of expected for 2 sections picture like xxxxx_____xxxxx_____

I've been a loyal FDM user for years and I've been developing software for decades and I have been absolutely thrilled with this new FDM 5. It's a fantastic example of how to redesign an old Windows-style software into a modern, flat, minimalist app, without removing essential functionality. I've been using this for several weeks and I've never felt like there was some feature from the old FDM 3.x that I was missing. I've come across literally no bugs or crashes.

I've used Windows since 3.1 and I don't think I've come across a better redesign than FDM 5. In fact, I wish you guys had redesigned the whole of Windows 7 instead of this messy Metro that we're stuck with. Keep up the good work. This is brilliant.
