Scheduled download didn't happen

Postby OldNick » Sun Apr 25, 2021 2:37 pm

I selected a url https://rkhive.com/rk-download/synth/70s_sci-fi.zip, which is a url for a Soundfont.

I then asked to use the scheduler and asked to download between 10 minutes from now until one minute after that (the file is only 85KB )

I waited 10 minutes and noting happened.

Am I missing something, please.

Thanks for any help.

Need some additional information, but also, I tested myself, and gave it a time frame of 5 minutes and it worked perfectly fine. Maybe try longer than a minute and see if it works?

The reason I say that is that, while the file should download nearly instantaneously on any decent connection, there is all of the handshaking involved in establishing the connection to the server in the first place before the download is actually initiated. If all of this is not done within a minute's time, then the timer will stop the DL process even if it starts at 59 seconds as soon as it hits that second time.

Thanks for the reply.

What extra info? There does not seem to be much more.

I will try a longer time.

OS, broadband speed, latency, etc. - the usual stuff you check if your internet is seemingly running slowly, really.

Most other info, like browser and whatnot is really not applicable since you gave the direct link, and anyone with FDM could copy the link and add it directly to FDM, bypassing the browser.

But, yeah, I'm willing to bet you can probably (reliably) use a 3 min window to grab that file - 2 may be doable if you have access to high speed broadband that has low latency and jitter. 1 is going to be iffy at best because of those factors - meaning sometimes it will work perfectly fine, and other times, well, not so well.

Thanks for the reply.

I am confused by bother the forum and the replies.

Does this mean I have to know how long the file is going go download before I can schedule it?

Sorry. That should be "how long the file is going to take to download"

I don't understand your action. Could you follow the reporting rules and provide step-by-step description, please? Some screenshots may be helpful.

Sure. You haven't named your OS and FDM version/build.

No - but you need to account for more than just click, download and done.

Here is a basic document that details what happens when you connect to a web site - https://www.onely.com/blog/internet-behind-scenes/

Although this is for a web page, remember that web 'pages' are just that - documents that you're downloading from the web, that your browser then reads and interprets in order to display content on your screen.

So, when downloading a file, you have to go through (almost) all of these same steps again. Therefore, it's never going to be instantaneous - you need to give it a little bit of time.

Another way of looking at it is that you gave it 1 minute., that wasn't long enough - try 2, and if that doesn't work, increment it again to 3, etc.
