I found FDM by searching for "free download manager" and I think the name is perfect. The name accurately describes what it is, a free download manager. There will always be people out there that will try to copy you if you have an excellent product and changing the name won't stop them. After all, a download manager by any other name...well it manages downloads, and FDM does it very well.

Just to add, AVG Antivirus is fairly unique, no? This hasn't stopped fake AVs from taking the name and charging people.
Regardless you can't help people by changing a name. If it was called Kickin' Download Manager, someone would just copy that too.
My opinion, the best thing to do is those who support to report. Ridding the internet of them (to an extent) is better than changing the name.

Name:
Keep "FDM". Since "Free Download Manager" exactly describes what it incorporates, it's the perfect brand name, and you don't change a brand, you defend it (unless it suffers serious damage from internal mistakes, which are so rare and grave you would notice instantly). Since it's open souce, derivates are welcome, I guess, but the original resides where the name says.

Checksums:
I vote for yes - even if only few will use them, those few are crucial, for several reasons: If files are manipulated, those few are the ones who will detect it and thus can inform those who don't check, FDM development and the general public, so manipulations are detected more quickly and information spreads faster. You may have correct files stored on your server, but a) no server is immune to attacks and b) they may not be the same as the files that arrive at a downloader's destination due to a man-in-the-middle-attack, may happen when entities (governmental or private in oppressive states) may try to feed manipulated files to users (like dissidents).

Usher, would you please stop telling him not to post links with malware when the links he is posting are legitimate virus scanning sites? All the site does is scan websites and files for bad things.

I say change the name to OpenDownloadManager, and get a SourceForge page. That takes care of hosting and everything. Then we can do away with the talk and what not and get on to adding features and fixing bugs! Same poster as the two above, in case you were wondering Usher.

1. Free Download Manager is well known name and is the only well known software with FDM abbreviation. ODM is an abbreviation for more than one software/computer related term.
2. Currently FDM is present on Sourceforge, but "Project Home" there links to default Sourceforge page instead of freedownloadmanager.org.
3. FDM is practically maintained by a single developer, so any organizational change is a huge waste of time.
4. If you don't want to register on this forum, just look more carefully while editing message and you can see that user name is editable ;-P

hello and hi to all !

i am a little confused:

i just downloaded fdm 3.0.852 from http://www.freedownloadmanager.org with 6.871.405 Bytes and MD5 code 157FB11E0154B6BD3404EEE357BF7F99.

there is a recomended link to source forge on the same page so i downloaded fdm from sf also, but it gives 6.975.564 Bytes and a MD5 code of D54A15C7F2F48F0E85EDED3DA8C63940.

I suppose both are 3.0.852? Why that difference? Hope that it is not because it is so late and I messed up something because too tired?

.-)

FDM 3.0 comes bundled with Software Informer (SI). There may be different versions of SI in different sites.
You should use FDM 3.0 only with old systems, for most users FDM 3.8 RC is recommended.

Did I get it right? FDM 3.8 RC from http://www.freedownloadmanager.org.
But when I need FDM 3.0.852, which one should I download?
that one from http://www.freedownloadmanager.org
or that one from sourceforge?

Thanks a lot and happy holidays!
