It is possible to change or "fake" what your web browser sends as its user agent.

I don't think FDM could have that kind of functionality, a user agent is something that doesn't deal with downloading exclusively.

Wrong. Some sites may block download if FDM provides different User-Agent than the web browser where the download has been catched. It's been also explained in some of the linked above messages.

I'm coming from FDM3.x to FDM 5.x/6.x. it looks like not only the interface had overly simplified, but features have been taken out as well

Feeling sad and disappointed, symbolizing that it is particularly easy to block FDM... :(
