Auto-Update Setting - Mystery

Postby Martek » Fri Dec 18, 2009 3:12 pm

Hello,

Thanks for a great download program!

I have a mystery regarding the Update setting:

If I start FDM via the start menu shortcut, the setting is as I want it (and that I had changed from the default): "Notify me only when an update is available".

BUT, if I start FDM by right-clicking on a download in IE and select "Download with Free Download Manager" from the context menu, THEN the setting shows as "Automatically download and install updates". That is not my setting.

I have checked the Registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FreeDownloadManager.ORG\Free Download Manager\Settings\Update) and found the Update setting, set to "1" (which appears to equal my desired setting of "Notify me only when an update is available".

(To experiment, if I exit FDM and then manually change this setting in the Registry to "2" then in FDM started via the start menu it changes the setting to "Turn off automatic updates", and if I change it to "0" it changes to the undesired "Automatically download and install updates", so that shows my FDM is getting this setting from that Registry entry, and also shows that "1" is the correct setting for my preference. BUT in all cases the right-click-in-IE-to-download context menu instance of FDM always shows the undesired "Automatically download and install updates").

FDM is installed to an alternate drive ("H:\apps\ip\FDM" instead of C:\<default normal path>) so it isn't the Vista "virtual file" feature causing it; and my account has full Administrator rights. I don't offhand see other settings behave that way (that is, have different setting based on how FDM starts); and either way I start the program I see the same set of data files (so it doesn't appear to be some kind of "shortcut startup difference". (My data file location is explicitly set to "H:\apps\ip\FDM\Data" and that setting shows up either way that FDM is started).

I have looked in the Registry under the two other users and under Local and I don't see any other FDM settings anywhere except the one location for my own account.

I am using Vista 64 Ultimate, and FDM 3.0 871.

Anyone have any ideas why it has the incorrect setting is in place when starting FDM via the IE context menu? Bug?

I really only want the "Notify me only when an update is available" setting, and never the automatic updates option (for any software). :)

Thanks,
Martek
