revise the browser extension / replace with flashgot bundle

Postby bviktor » Wed Jul 15, 2009 5:45 am

IF YOU ARE LAZY: please simply replace your current firefox extension with a flashgot bundle. it would actually solve this problem (for firefox, at least), and you wouldn't have to keep up with firefox development. flashgot gets updated really often, you would just have to check for updates and update the installer with them (after install firefox will take care of flashgot updates, so the fdm updater shouldn't interfere with that).

IF YOU ARE NOT: read on...

the current browser extension (which installs into IE and FF without ever asking) is just not fine this way.

first off, ask during install, whether i want to install it into my browsers, and if i do, let me select which of my browsers to install into.

about its behaviour: it will just load fdm when i click on a link to a file. but there are times at which i don't want to use fdm coz

- the file i want to download is very small and there's no point to use a download manager for that
- the server doesn't allow download managers, sometimes it just downloads some index.php's, while the browser downloads it no probz
- i want to simply open the file, so let the browser save it to a temp location. i don't want to store it permanently
- an other user on the same pc won't know what to do with fdm's add download dialog, even though he/she could handle firefox/ie/etc itself

all these would require a reworked browser extension which would allow us to select whether to open/download with browser/download with fdm.

this can now be achieved by installing firefox, then installing fdm, then restarting firefox and disabling the fdm extension, installing flashgot, and then restarting firefox again. this is a really inconvenient procedure and is really hard and time-consuming to explain to friends who are usually newbies of course.

the best way to solve this would be to achieve what flashgot offers:

i guess you all know firefox, but if not, the first one opens the file, the 2nd downloads it with fdm, and the 3rd one downloads it with the browser.

please, revise the extension so that fdm can be used on demand, don't force it. and don't add a new dialog, and then fall back to the original when cancelled, that's just silly. modify the existing dialog and add an option to use fdm, just like flashgot does. if i select to download with fdm, then launch fdm's add download dialog.

yes, there's the "alt" option and the size limit (which conflict anyway - if i press alt, it will also download smaller files than the limit), but a gui would be better for this, it's much more intuitive than some options in the n'th menu.

also, when it becomes possible, please add chrome support coz it gets really popular (already more popular than long-standing opera), and now i can't download with fdm from sites which check referrers or hide download urls in some way (i have to open firefox just for this).

thanks in advance.
