Please update the plugin for firefox 15 with your next update

FDM works with Firefox up to 16 alpha. Please update your install.rdf file as described in other topics, if you want to be more helpful in Firefox testing.

I have firefox Aurora 16.0a2 and it doesn't work

You didn't read my suggestion or you didn't do what I suggested. If you still want to report a problem, follow the rules explained in "How to report a bug" topic, please.

I must say this is a great utility, but constantly having to go in and manually edit files to make it work does not make it user friendly, with respect many who use this and other add-ons in their browsers are non techie people. However, I also realise the rapid release cycle that Mozilla have adopted potentially makes it difficult for developers to keep pace with updates.

I've used FDM for some time but by far the biggest single problem is the compatibility issue and it's now impacting on it's usabilty. You say it works up to 16 alpha (why then have the max version set to 14?) In its current state it is in fact incompatible with Fx 15 until the user goes in and hacks the max version no. bad form. It seems very strange that you expect users to do this as a matter of course when at best that can only be viewed as a workaround.

I for one don't know how to update the 'install.rdf' file, all I know is that basically you are increasing the max version no. to bring it in line with the browser version, and when you say 'as described in other topics'. A link to the relevent topic might be useful? Respectfully, this is a big forum and I have trudged through and not been able to find detailed instructions on how to do this.

FDM developers appear to use an inordinate no. of beta versions sandwiched in between stable releases, but invariably these beta's still don't function sufficiently, if at all with any given browser release, all for the sake of not having the correct max version no. in the 'install rdf' file, in most cases it seems.

I have tried to be constructive here as a frustrated user of a very good utility, so I don't really want to look elswhere but.... due to the lack of will also to provide auto-integration into Pale Moon, in spite of previous requests.... well......?

No disrespect intended, but it would be useful for the above to be viewed from a pragmatic standpoint and not a moderators viewpoint.

I have to acknowledge to this. Well written (and not negative).
Using FDM since years, love this great tool, but would like to some more final versions in between, and then, this should "simply" work without having to fiddle around with some changes in files and so on.

Come on, please release the next final version soon (hopefully), put this announcement in a new, separate topic here in the forum (I can not read this Beta topic any more) and provide an actual as-it-is-stable version with the stand of Aug/Sep/whatever 2012.

Would be worth the efforts because FDM is and will remain a fine program.

Thanks for your work and hope that you can understand us users, too.

Just use FlashGot (Firefox addon) to dump files into FDM

no need for FDM plugin anymore

Good work around with flashgot. I can appreciate how difficult it can be to edit the install.rdf file as suggested.,

Another suggestion you may find useful which will work with ALL extensions not just FDM.

goto about:config

In the search bar type extensions.checkcompatibility

set any existing values to false

Create a new boolean called extensions.checkCompatibility.15.0 and set this to false

Restart FF and verify the FDM extension is enabled.

How to update install.rdf in Firefox/Win7 x64.

Shut Firefox. Go to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Free Download Manager\Firefox\extension\install.rdf

Open with Notepad.

Find:

<em:targetApplication> 
<Description>
<em:id>{xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}</em:id>
<em:minVersion>1.5</em:minVersion>
<em:maxVersion>14.*.*</em:maxVersion>

Change "14" to "15" and save the file. Now good for all version 15 updates.

I just did this for a number of plugins that were not ready for Firefox 15 and then updated Firefox. This is now going to be a bigger issue with Firefox 15+ making silent updates. It should be the responsibility of the extension authors to stay on top of future Firefox updates.

It was the quest for an updated addin that brought me back.

I have had to changed the "maxversion" number in several addins over the years, but most now seem to have caught up and no longer expect me to do that.

Given how trivial the task is, I am puzzled by the lack of action, and with the defensive response to perfectly legitimate queries.

Agree with these comments completely, a very good utility whose ongoing bugs aren't being given the level of concern they duly deserve (in some cases none at all) to users asking for support. This leaves the impression of a largely indifferent and detached development team, and moderator(s) who all to often adopt a rather curt, pedantic and preemptory demeanor.

Edit: Hello, is anyone out there reading and responding to these posts, looks like non-acknowledgement of previous constructive comments and criticism, mine (and others)... kinda proves the point I was making in the first place. :wink:

I thought Mozilla solved this issue for all addons when they started the rapid-release cycle. I cannot find links for this but I believe the compatibility checking function no longer required the rdf to specify a version number limit.

+1 for a user affected by FDM plugin disabled by Firefox 15

Did they hell, they didn't give it a second thought when they adopted the rabid-release schedule, you're right the compatibility checking function doesn't require the maxVersion limit, but it still monitors it and if it's out of date - bam, so it's up to the developers to keep pace and make sure their add-ons don't specify limits or at the very least ones that are so tight.

It's now reached the point where users of Mozilla based browsers are pulling there hair out with frustration.... so please, is it too much to ask Mozilla and add-on developers to work in harmony rather than discord, for the sake of their user base, without whom what are they there for anyway.

I get the same problem. I really really love FDM (I used Flasget before I switched to FDM), but the upgrading thing in Firefox is the most irritating thing about FDM.

I've just known that I should edit install.rdf manually. Lil bit strange, but well, okay, I'll try it.
