if you just get the download running and hit the '-' button on your numerical pad it will reduce the number of sections each time until you are left with one.
also under settings - downloads - network you could just set one of the profiles to 'maximum number of connections per one server' to 1

With windows 7 hybridized sleep mode a lot of people are using shorter and shorter sleep times.
A great feature would be to prevent sleep mode whilst downloads are running.
